"If we strive to cultivate musical sensitivity and perception in our students, we must likewise give adequate recognition for their efforts and achievements, and we must inspire them to strive for higher goals. In what better way than by bestowing upon them life membership in a worldwide honorary organization for musical youth?"
-Alexander Harley, Founder, Tri-M Music Honor Society
Tri-M Music Honor Society
Chapter 2708
Forsyth Central High School
Quick History
Tri-M has been celebrating music in the secondary schools for over 45 years. In 1952 Alexander & Frances Harley began the honor society that has grown to nearly 2,900 chapters all over the world.
An Introduction to Tri-M
The Tri-M Music Honor Society is the international music honor society for secondary school students (middle/junior high and high school) that motivates and recognizes musical achievement. Founded in 1952 by Alexander and Frances Harley, Tri-M has helped young people provide years of service through music in thousands of schools throughout the world. Through nearly 2,900 chartered chapters, thousands of students have received recognition for their efforts and honor for their musical accomplishments.
Tri-M shares and supports the objectives of every dedicated music educator - to increase student and school involvement with music and to strengthen and unify the school music program. Tri-M offers a complete system of rewards that help motivate effort and recognize excellence in individuals and chapters. With this system, the society builds self-esteem and provides for a channel of personal fulfillment
Tri-M is a program of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, the largest non-profit organization dedicated to the advancement of music education. Through its many programs, activities, publications, and conferences, MENC addresses all aspects of music education and works to ensure that every student has access and exposure to a balanced, comprehensive, and high quality program of music instruction.
The MENC National Board and Council of Music Honor Society Chairpersons consisting of state and division chairpersons and the national chairperson provide guidance and direction in matters pertaining to Tri-M membership and chapter operation. As with all programs of MENC, Tri-M is financed through MENC membership dues and publication sales; thus, sponsor membership in MENC is encouraged.
