Cherokee and Creek Indians

Introduction

Your friends have joined you for a walk along the Coastal Shores of Jekyll Island, Georgia.  As you walk by the roaring waves of the ocean and the tide rolls in, you notice an old bottle with a message inside. You open the bottle to find a message from a Cherokee Indian. Along with the message is an invitation to live life with the Indians.

As you and your friends accept the invitation, you are immediately taken back many years ago into the lives of the Indians. You are about to learn the ways of the first people to live in our state.

Task

You are living among the tribes of the Cherokee and Creek Indians. You will walk and talk with them every day and let your classmates know what life was like during the Indian times. You and your partner will be given a role as either a Cherokee or Creek Indian and you will report back information to the class.

Process

You and your partner are living among the Cherokee and Creek Indians. While you live with them, you will learn about their ways of life and report your findings back to the class. The things you will report are:

  1. What type of clothes do you wear?
  2. What type of food do you eat?
  3. What type of house do you live in?
  4. What type of activities do you do with your friends?
  5. How do your parents provide a house and food?
  6. What types of tools are made and used in your tribe?
  7. List 3 ways your life as a Native American Indian is different than your life now.

Lastly, you and your partner will create a shield that describes your tribe. Use the information you find while researching and make appropriate pictures for your crest.

As you live among the tribes and gather information, you will fill out the attached Research Storyboard. You need at least 3 facts in each area on the storyboard.

Conclusion

Return to your classroom and you will be paired up with someone from the opposite tribe to compare and contrast the two tribes' traditions and customs. You will present your findings to the class.

Native Americans customs and traditions were influenced by the world around them -- they were excellent adaptors to their environment.  How do you suppose we have adapted to our environment?  What influences the way we live?
