Children's literature is a wonderful way to celebrate the season, and what better way than with Tomie dePaola and some of his legendary books.  Cuddle up with The Legend of the Poinsettia and An Early American Christmas to bring a little history of the celebration into the classroom.  These are just two favorites that highlight the poinsettia and the beginning of the Christmas tree in early America.  To find out more about the season's traditions check out O' Christmas Tree Scavenger Hunt.  See real trees growing at the Estimating Christmas Trees site!  Don't forget to check the holiday links as well!  Warmest wishes to you and your family this holiday season!

The Legend of the Poinsettia
By Tomie dePaola

A Creative Writing Activity

After reading this wonderful legend about the Mexican wildflower, flor de fuego(fire flower), motivate students to write about the legend by creating a template in Microsoft Word with a watermark.  The watermark can be in color or you can apply grayscale.  If time does not allow, you can print and make copies for them to work with pencil and paper but ideally you can format a text box and let them create at the computer.

Create your own writing prompts or use one of the examples below:

  • Write a short paragraph about the story
  • Create a sign/book jacket to promote the book
  • Write a poem(cinquain) about the poinsettia

An Early American Christmas
By Tomie dePaola

An Early American Christmas is a story that Tomie dePaola wrote after researching historical facts about the first evidence of Christmas celebration in the early 1800's.  After reading this wonderful story, students can create a class slideshow that tells about their families' traditions.   They can also go on a scavenger hunt to learn more about the history of Christmas trees in early America.

Create a Class Slideshow

Brainstorm with students using Inspiration or draw a large web on the board to highlight some of the students' family traditions.  After brainstorming give each student the opportunity to design a slide in Microsoft PowerPoint to depict a special family tradition celebrated by their family during the holiday season.  Use the storyboard template provided or create one to suit your needs in PowerPoint.

Estimating Christmas Trees!

The Christmas tree is a tradition at many homes during the holiday season.  Selecting just the right tree is a very important. Students will have fun viewing just the right tree by cruising the photo album from The Branch House Tree Farm in Crossnore, North Carolina.  The objective of this activity is to view the different tree sizes and estimate their height.  They can then plug their estimations into the template that gives the actual tree height and create their graphs to show how their estimations compare with actual trees' heights!

The Night Tree   - A wonderful book by Eve Bunting.  Here is a KidPix lesson for the primary student.  This is a very simple lesson but ideal for showing students how to use the tools in Kid Pix Deluxe!

42Explore - Christmas Around the World!  There are so many of my favorite links connected at this site.  Pleasant Grove Elementary and KSU are linked from this vast resource.  Time yourself for at least thirty minutes to an hour to visit the resources here!
The Little Tree - This is a hotlist of sites for the younger student to enjoy during the holiday season.  These activities help the student work on visual memory skills, discrimination and eye hand coordination.
Awesome Christmas Clip Art for Kids - These graphics can be used in many different types of publications, student generated or teacher generated!
Holiday Downloads - A great resource from Teach-ology.com for the creative teacher!
