Don't be grouchy like Eric Carle's The Grouchy Ladybug.   Treat yourself by taking the time out of your busy day to learn something new.   Here are a few activities to learn  how to create with tools that are already available to you.  Create cool photo projects by learning how to crop photos in Microsoft Paint.  Learn how to create picture bullets in Microsoft 2000.  Listed are ideas on how to create flash cards or fact booklets with your students.  Be sure to check out the insect resources to create your own wonderful projects!  The ready-made lesson plans offered at two great sites below are a few great examples of why you need to take the time to examine the resources available for your students.  The engaging lessons are there if you just take the time.

Using Microsoft Paint and KidPix to Create a Student Bug Gallery

Primary students can learn about insect anatomy by creating a bug gallery. Creating a class bug gallery is exciting when using student portrait photos as the first body part, the head.  Use the Bug Gallery lesson plan and directions below to create your own class gallery.   The oversized sunglasses on these kindergarten students  make it even more special!

There are many, many ways  teachers and students can record facts gathered to use for future studies.  Here are just two examples created in Microsoft Word 2000 using bulleted lists and flash cards.

Creating a Bulleted List

Create a bug fact list with picture bullets.  Word 2000 will let you import and copy images into the picture bullet gallery.

Creating Flash Cards

Once you create this quick and easy template, you can reuse it over and over for multiple uses.  Once you create one you can practice to make differnt size cards.

Intel In Education

Intel, Innovator in Education, has a new look and design with which offers lots of free resources.  Check out the Intel Unit and Lesson Plan Finder.  Type in Insect for the keyword, check the appropriate boxes (K-2,3-5) and then select find.  Going Buggy is a great lesson plan with lots of ideas and templates.   The World of Insects is another great lesson.  You can follow simple directions on how to download the entire lesson or just parts. 

The University of Arizona Center for Insect Science Research Outreach

Using Live Insects in the Elementary Classrooms for Early Lessons in Life offers twenty very complete lesson plans.  Little Me in a Big World is a lesson on self-esteem using Two Bad Ants by Chris Van Allsburg as a jumping off point.   Information sheets as well as rearing sheets on how to care for particular insects are included at the site.
