March is typically a very busy month for the elementary teacher.  ITBS testing, early release conference days, and report cards or narratives are just a few activities to keep a teacher hopping.   On top of that, several teachers at Midway and Vickery are working on classroom web pages.  They are using FrontPage Express to create these simple pages.  They are very excited about the process and watching their pages grow.  To see more about creating simple web pages, click Web Garden 101 below.

There is so much information to collect and analyze in America Quest.   Everyday there is data reported from how much water is consumed to the temperatures and humidity, to the footage of dental floss and toilet paper used.

Create a weekly temperature graph for the younger student to input the data.  Save the template to use each week.  Older students can compare the temperature in their area with the temperature of the southwest desert. Averages can be incorporated as well. wpeEC.gif (5303 bytes)

The new kidpix site just came online last month.  It contains a link for kids with online painting, a picture of the week as well as a bright idea for the month.  The online painting is a small version of kidpix that contains some of the tools from the program.  It tends to load slowly so be patient.  There is a parent link that gives parents information about Kid Pix and the latest version.  There is also an educator's link that contains a link of the month.  Check out this month's link from Grand Forks Public Schools, North Dakota.  There are many integration ideas in Language Arts and Social Studies.

In Kid Pix under Goodies there are many useful things filed under Pick More Pictures.
1) Under Backgrounds there are settings for so many topics.   Check out the castles under fantasy, volcanoes under prehist and the desert and adobe house under thewest folder.
2) Under Clip Art, check out the flags and presidents folder.
3) Under Cutouts, check out the paper doll cutouts for fairytales under dolls.  There are headbands and hats as well.  Under rainy day there are some neat dinosaurs and play money.  The shapes include a cake, heart, tree and pumpkin.
4) Under Maps you will find the states and countries.  These are great for social studies.

Emily Tyson, a Vickery Creek second grade teacher has been teaching her students powerpoint and how to use a diskette to save and retrieve their project.  The second graders researched and wrote their rough draft using a story board before working on the computer.  Check out this report by one of her students.

An Awesome Site From New Zealand
Units of Learning

english.gif (1425 bytes)

English On-Line is part of an ongoing English professional development contract between UNITEC Institute of Technology and the New Zealand Ministry of Education. In 1998 and 1999 it involved 100 primary and secondary schools per year. Each school nominated a lead teacher who undertook an Internet tutorial, and then developed a unit of learning which was posted on the site as a permanent resource for New Zealand (and international) English teachers.
