Setting Up Classroom KeyPal Accounts

Electronic penpals known as "keypals" have become a popular writing project in schools around the world.  Students can gain invaluable insight by sharing information about their culture with students from other countries and with far different styles of living.  Keypals can do many things.   They share research projects, conduct Internet treasure hunts, collaborate on science experiments and even use snail mail (US Postal Service) to share their scrapbooks, maps, and mascots.   Incorporating keypals in your curriculum correlates to many QCC Standards in Language Arts.
For safety and management reason an elementary  class should share one e-mail account to deliver information.  This account can be set up through Yahoo or Hotmail.
Once the account is in place keypals can be found at several sites.  The most popular site is epal.com.

Lynn Bump, a Midway 2/3 teacher, represented Forsyth County in a week long summer Internet Surf Camp at Floyd College in Rome.  Teachers from around the state participated with Lynn to locate Internet sites that connected and correlated to the Georgia's QCC Standards.  Lessons were then written by participants for posting on the new Georgia Learning Connections.  We look forward to viewing this vast site of lesson resources that will premier in October.  Lynn will continue to be a member of this group throughout the school year and represent Forsyth the summer of 2000.  We are very proud of Lynn.

Teachers can create simple webpages at this wonderful site hosted by a local businessman in Alpharetta, Crabapple to be exact.  Teachers can communicate schedules, homework assignments, vocabulary lists, post assignments and web links that correlate with current studies.  If you are a new teacher and would like assistance in creating a webpage with schoolnotes, please contact me so we can schedule a session at your school.
Check out some examples from our wonderful educators:
Dianne Meyer - Midway - 4/5 Grade
Lynn Bump - Midway - 2/3 Grade
Karen Sperber - Vickery - Music

Lisa Kid - Settles Bridge
Torrie Voss - Daves Creek
Kim Medlin - Settles Bridge
Faye Drummond - Sawnee

Staying Connected to fellow Educators!
Classroom Connect’s Teacher Search database makes it easy for educators to locate colleagues around the globe. You can use Teacher Search to find keypals, hook up with project collaborators, or discover like-minded colleagues in  your area.
This is a great place to locate friends.

Intranet Site of the Month
This site can only be viewed within the Forsyth County School System.  We are currently building an Intranet to expand our technology resources for teachers and students.

This site was created by Forsyth County Instructional Technology Specialists to provide teachers an online help resource for using the new gradebook software.  We are providing many online tutorials to keep the lines of communication open at all times.
