Literacy Opportunities

Pictures personalize learning, clarify it, frame it... and add depth. Children express their first written thoughts with pictures, and continue to use visual expression in all aspects of the teaching and learning process.

The Writing Prompt Today is.....

Do your students groan when you say, "Write about your vacation"? Take pictures of their classroom/school experiences and project one on the TV and/or LCD projector. Model the writing with their input, using the 'Reach Out' method - who, where, when, why and how of the picture. Students will then write their own, answering those questions themselves.

If I Were a Penguin...

After a study of penguins, this first grader wrote a creative piece in a word document that had been watermarked by his teacher, with a picture of himself with the penguin.
If I Were a Penguin

Students researched penguins and acquired the identity of different penguins. Everyday at 1:30 EST, they watched the penguins feed on a live cam from the Monterey Aquarium.

Pictures and Literacy - Limitless Possibilities

Utilizing pictures (digital camera, scanned and original student work), in programs like Kid Pix Deluxe, Word, Power Point, Inspiration and Kidsperation, offer many opportunities for students to express their creativity, as well as their literary abilities.
Going Digital in Your Classroom

Put the Digital Camera
in your Backpack

You and your students take the digital camera on walks around and through the school, as well as fieldtrips. When the pictures are then inserted into Kid Pix, Word or PowerPoint, the students can respond to what's happening in the picture.

Motivational Tools for Young Writers

Students enjoy using magnet pages to create words, sentences, poems and stories. Take it one step further and let them use the vocabulary magnets to create their own sentences in Word or PowerPoint by using the print screen option to paste the magnet page into the desktop publishing program.

Celebrate the Moments - Learning is Fun!

Students love to celebrate accomplishments. This second grade read and wrote stories during cookie week. After graphing their favorite cookies, they celebrated by making hamburger cookies. Writing about the celebration and sharing their creations was a great culmination for a week of hard work. Learning can be fun!
